Since the turn of the century canoeists have taken to the water with canoes out-fitted with lateen rigs, rudder, and leeboard.
Canoe sailing was an avid pastime of the serious canoeists during the "Golden Age" of canoeing (1900-1950). Today canoeists have rediscovered the excitement of sailing a canoe. Out-fitted with 44 sq. ft. lateen sail, leeboard, and rope rudder, the canoe sailor can harness the wind and explore large lakes and bays that might otherwise be impassible to the paddler.
I can install sailing rigs to both the Cheemaun and Atksinon Traveler. Also, given the dimensions of nearly any wooden canoe I can make you a sail rig that can be installed on your canoe with only simple and relatively minor modifications.
I offer two different styles of sailing rigs. The standard sailing package, Option #1, includes modern blocks and accessories and is suited to those who want a sailing rig primarily for recreational purposes. Option #2, the traditional brass sailing hardware packages includes strong, sturdy, hand-made brass blocks. This rig is suited for the wooden canoe purist who desires a functional yet elegant sailing rig.
