If wooden canoe enthusiasts were interested in the latest high-tech water proof storage technologies, they wouldn't be wooden canoe enthusiasts! The Cedar Island Canoes "Wood Canvas Wanigan" provides rigid, spacious, water-resistant storage without sacrificing the traditional look of the wood canvas canoe. These wanigans are custom-built to fit the curvature of a canoe and feature numerous structural and finishing details that mimic the look and design of wood canvas canoes.

Traditional Styling:
While designing this wanigan, I made every effort to ensure it would fit the traditional look and feel of the wood canvas canoe. The result is, to my knowledge, the first "wood canvas wanigan". It features many construction details similar to a wood canvas canoe. Built primarily out of cedar, the wanigan is covered in canvas and then painted to provide some measure of water resistance. While traditionally finished with green paint, the wanigan can be painted to match the hull of the canoe with which it will be used. Steam-bent cedar ribs span the length of the wanigan's bottom to provide extra strength. Cedar strips, in the style of half-ribs, add rigidity to the side of the wanigan. Carrying handles, similar to mahogany outwales, trim the ends of the wanigan.

Portability & Versatility:
Designed to go between the center and quarter thwarts, the wanigan features a curved bottom that allows it fit snugly into almost any canoe (wood canvas or otherwise). While not in the canoe, the wanigan is easily transported with either its rope handles or its ergonomic "outwale-style" wooden edges. The wanigan's interior is painted white to protect it from the everyday wear-and-tear of moving objects in and out. The hinged half-lids make the wanigan easy to open while paddling--there is no lid to take off and stow in the boat. The lipped construction of the lid ensures that the wanigan's interior will stay dry in all but the most severe weather conditions. Of course, one need only throw a raincoat or tarp over the wanigan to make it completely water tight.
